No simple tip this week, but two Apps instead! This week we are talking about Mobile Me!! If you do not have MobileMe, you will not be able to use these apps. First, let me tell you what MobileMe is. MobileMe is the service from Apple that automatically pushes new email, contacts, and calendar events over the air to your iPhone and keeps your important data in sync across your Mac, PC, and the Web. It also makes it easy to share photos and access important files on the go. It can also located your iPhone and remotely message it or wipe it if needed. We will be talking about MobileMe in my Advanced iPhone classes. This week’s App of the Week is iDisk.
Description: Great way to store documents that you can access from you iPhone, iPad, or any Computer! This does not take up space on any of your devices, but you can still get to any of the files anytime you need to.
Cost: Free
Directions:
- Download the application from the App Store.
- Once you have downloaded the app, open it.
- It will ask you for your user name and password or if you are not a member, tap the “Learn more” to go to the website that explains all of mobile me. Type in your user name and password.
- It will open to your iDisk folders: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, and Shared. Tap on one of the folders to open it. It will show you what is in your MobileMe folders. Tap on the item to open and view it. You can share it with someone by taping the share link next to the file on the right or when you are in the file it is on the bottom left side. It will pull up an email and all you do is put in the address of the person you want to share it with and type your message and hit send.
- The next tap is the Recents, which is a list of the most current files that you have accessed.
- Then you have the Shared Files, which is the list of files that you have shared with others.
- The last tab is the Public Folders. These are files that you have put in a folder that is open to anyone to see.
Options:
- If you are starting out with MobileMe, you may not have any documents in your MobileMe, so to add documents, you will need to use your computer. On your computer, sign into your www.me.com website with your user name and password. When you are signed in, select the iDisk icon at the top and go to the file folder you would like to put the document/picture/media/etc in and click on the up arrow at the top. It will then open a box to allow you to find the document on your computer by clicking “choose” and then “select” once you have found the correct documents.
- Sharing is a great way to send large files to people that might not ordinarily be able to get it through email.
This week’s App of the Week is Gallery.
Description: This is the app where you can view your pictures on your MobileMe account and share any or all pictures with someone (you email them a link).

Directions:
- Download the application from the App Store.
- Once you have downloaded the app, open it.
- It will ask you for your user name and password or if you are not a member, tap the “Learn more” to go to the website that explains all of mobile me. Type in your user name and password.
- It will open to your “My Gallery” and it will have the folders of each of your albums that you have uploaded to MobileMe. It will also ask you if you would like to add friends. While in the Gallery and the folder that you are looking at, you can click the envelope at the top right and it will open up an email with a link to the album that you can send to anyone. If you want to only send one picture, then be on that picture, not the album before you click the email link. Keep in mind that whatever you are looking at, is what it will send a link for.
- There are no tabs in this app, but you can click the top left button to go back to the Galleries to “add a friend” or to see the albums with your friends, tap on their name. Tap the top right “edit” button to delete friends.
Options:
- The cool thing is that it will search through your contacts to tell you who is also a user of MobileMe and it will allow them to be a friend.
- To log out of the Galleries, go to the main screen until you see the “settings” at the top left corner and after you tap on it, it will give you options to “log out” and other options for the Gallery settings.
